SAGE – Read & Publish Agreement 2026 onwards: Update on the negotiations

Negotiations between the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries and SAGE regarding the Read & Publish agreement from 2026 onwards have so far not produced a satisfactory outcome. As the current agreement expires on 31 December 2025, there will be no contract in place as of the 1st of January 2026.

Please note the following:

Reading access

  • During an eventual grace period, access to newly published articles may remain briefly available. After this, new articles from 2026 onwards will no longer be accessible (except for Open Access publications).
  • Access to previously subscribed journal years will remain in place.
  • Guidance on how to locate articles that are no longer accessible can be found in the factsheet How to get the Article.

Publishing

  • Publishing in hybrid journals will still be possible free of charge; however, articles will not be made Open Access. Please do not select the Open Access option when publishing in hybrid journals. The payment of APCs (Article Processing Charges) is strongly discouraged.
  • When publishing in Gold Open Access (fully OA) journals from SAGE, neither the SNSF nor the University of Basel will cover the APCs.
  • Please make use of Green Open Access (self-archiving) by depositing your Author Accepted Manuscript in UNIverse. The UB editorial team will then verify the applicable embargo period before making the publication available in edoc. This route complies with the Open Access Policy of the University of Basel as well as the Open Access requirements of the SNSF.
  • If possible, consider publishing in another journal whose publisher has an agreement covering Open Access publication costs (see the full list here).

Further information and FAQs can be found in the document provided by the Consortium. If you have any questions, please contact openaccess@unibas.ch.
