Church Archive

The importance of the Church Archive at the University Library – consisting of manuscripts and printed works – lies primarily in the important documents and collections of letters by humanists such as Wolfgang Fabricius Capito, Matthias Erb and Bonifatius Amerbach. The collection also includes a number of valuable manuscripts, among them the chronicle of Hermann von Offenburg and the diary of Johannes Gast. In 2025, the Church Archive was transferred to the ownership of the University Library Basel as a donation from the Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Basel-Stadt.

The holdings of the Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Basel-Stadt, including the archive of the same name, were housed in the so-called Chapter House on Rittergasse until 1884. Following its demolition, the archival materials were transferred to the Staatsarchiv Basel-Stadt, while the University Library, in line with the thinking of the time, took over the holdings relevant to research around 1886.
