The Basel bibliography started in 1919 as an annual record of the new literature written about Basel. From 1989 to 2004 there was a common cantonal bibliography of the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft. Since 2005, it has been published as the bibliography of the canton of Basel-Stadt, including all literature relevant to the Basel region. Searching the Basel bibliography

The printed years 1919-2002 of the Basel bibliography are available in the open stacks at the University Library Basel as well as in various institutions. For the years 1919-1945, there is a register in the form of a catalogue which is available to be consulted in the reading room at the manuscript department of the University Library Basel.

The Basel bibliography records autonomous publications as well as chapters and articles from all subject areas relating to the canton of Basel-Stadt and the Basel region. Also recognised within the bibliography are persons whose lives and works are associated with this region independently of their citizenship.

Not generally recorded are encyclopaedia articles, annual reports without independent thematic representations, periodic government documents, collections of laws, court decisions, short reviews, exhibition reports, performance reviews. Daily newspapers, some of which can be accessed through a full-text search, are not recorded in their entirety but are only evaluated for particularly extensive and thematically relevant contributions.
