Open Access publishing

There is a large and growing number of renowned open access journals and publishing houses in all subject areas.

Find

The central registry for OA journals is the Directory of Open Access Journals. If you already have a manuscript or an abstract, B!son can be helpful for finding the best journal for it.

Check

You can check the trustworthiness of a publisher or journal using the Think - Check - Submit  checklist.

Funding and support

Publication discounts

The university of Basel has agreements with many major publishers that partially or even fully cover the publication costs for affiliated authors. You can find the current overview on the publication discounts subpage.

Which funding options are available for a specific journal can be determined using the oa.finder service linked here (see here for a written manual):

Third-party funding

If your research receives external funding, the funding institution will often also cover the costs of open access publication. However, the Swiss National Science Foundation and the European Committees only support publications via the so-called "Golden" route. Article Processing Charges to make individual articles in an otherwise closed journal Open Access (so-called "Hybrid Open Access") are not funded by these institutions.

Publication fund of the university

For publications for which the processing charge (APC/BPC) cannot be covered by third-party funding, the University provides an Open Access Publication Fund. The fund is available to researchers from the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Psychology.
