Literature Searching with PubMed – Advanced
This course builds on the course “Basics in Literature Searching: PubMed and Other Resources”. It will deepen and complement your knowledge on the important search functions needed for a specific and comprehensive medical literature search. You will learn to build a systematic search strategy by extracting keywords (MeSH) and text words from references. Tips and tricks, as well as saving and exporting search strategies and search results will be shared.
Contents
- Brief repetition: Defining the question; Boolean search operators (AND, OR, NOT); contents of PubMed
- Thesaurus; searching with Medical Subject Headings (with exercise)
- Searching with text words / field search / truncation (with exercise)
- Combining MeSH and text-word searches (with exercise)
- Saving and managing searches; personal settings, alert services
- Export of references and access to full texts via swisscovery
Target Group
Anyone interested in learning complex search methods with PubMed: e.g. students, researchers and medical staff/clinicians.
Requirements
Basic knowledge of database searching (corresponding to the content of the course "Basics in Literature Searching: PubMed and Other Resources" 24H04212c, which is publicly advertised and taught to medical students as a lecture in the 5th semester).
