Searching

All media of the University Medical Library, including electronic media, are listed in the library catalogue.

The most important questions about the catalogue are answered on the swisscovery help page.

Ordering & borrowing media

Media in the openly accessible area and on the basement floor (i.e. sports library) can be borrowed. The regular loan period is 28 days, please see details on renewals, etc. under Loan periods.

Courier orders

Media from other Basel libraries can be ordered free of charge to the Medical University Library and vice versa. Media from various other Swiss libraries outside Basel can be ordered to the Medical University Library for a fee (SLSP courier). Media ordered via the courier (SLSP or Basel courier) can be returned to any library connected to it. Please find more information under Courier orders

Openly accessible area

You can get books directly from the shelves on the first floor or order them at the University Main Library. The shelving follows the NLM classification scheme.

Copy & article orders

Search and order copies directly in PubMed (use the link of the University Library Basel) and other databases via “SFX”, or alternatively via the copy order form. In order to do this you must be registered in swisscovery Basel.

Assistance

The information desk team is happy to support you with searching, borrowing and orders. Our scientific team offers individual consultations for searching in specialist databases and can also carry out searches on your behalf.

 

Systematic reviews and mediated searches

In collaboration with the Department of Clinical Research (DKF), we offer methodological and statistical support in all phases of your project. Upon request, we also provide support for projects in non-medical fields.

Graduate School Medical and Health Sciences (GSMHS): Introductory courses in systematic reviewing

In collaboration with the Graduate School Medical and Health Sciences (GSMHS), we offer two introductory courses (blended learning) in systematic reviewing: one focusing on systematic literature searching, and one covering all steps of a systematic review. The courses are held in English.


CAS Systematic Review Information Specialist

The Campus Muttenz Library, together with the University Library of Medicine, offers a certified continuing education program for research and publication support of evidence-synthesizing secondary studies at the School of Life Sciences FHNW. The interdisciplinary CAS program includes the learning of systematic literature searches, the creation of transparent and reproducible reporting, as well as the teaching of specific methodological advice.

The CAS programme is held in English and it is aimed at university graduates from all empirical disciplines. Particularly addressed are persons in scientific libraries, universities and research institutions who are confronted with the preparation of systematic reviews in their daily work.

Training videos

The Medical Library provides recordings of online training courses. For the field of medicine, there are currently tutorials on PubMed, Embase, Ovid and EndNote.

Group rooms 1 (1st floor), 2 (3rd floor) and 3 (basement) can be reserved on weekdays by e-mail (before 4.45 pm for the following day), by telephone or directly at the counter on the ground floor. On Saturdays, last-minute reservations can only be made by telephone or on site.

    A room can be reserved for a maximum of 4 hours per person.
    The rooms can be reserved during the building's opening hours (weekdays 08.00 to 21.00, Saturdays 08.00 to 16.00).

Day lockers

The day lockers (lockers 1-6) can be borrowed at the counter during opening hours for the current day.

  • Swisscovery registration is a prerequisite.
  • The key must be returned on the same day, otherwise the first chargeable reminder will be issued the following day.
Semester lockers

The semester lockers (locker 7-54) can be obtained free of charge for the duration of a semester.

  • Swisscovery registration is a prerequisite.
  • Deposit of CHF 50 in cash.
  • You can then fill in the application form at the counter and take the locker key with you immediately afterwards.

Take tram no. 8 or no. 11 to "Schifflände". At Confiserie Bachmann, go through Blumengasse; the entrance to the University Medical Library at Spiegelgasse 5 is around the corner.

From Badischer Bahnhof (German train station):
Take tram no. 6 to "Schifflände". At Confiserie Bachmann, go through Blumengasse; the entrance to the University Medical Library at Spiegelgasse 5 is around the corner.

By car
The University Medical Library is in the city centre, diagonally opposite the "Storchen" car park. Our library is just a short walk from there.

Delivery of goodsThe service entrance in the Blumengasse can be used for delivery of goods. Please ring the bell at the main entrance so that we can open the side entrance for you.
