Springer Nature: Current status of the negotiations

As negotiations for a renewed Read & Publish agreement with Springer Nature have so far been unsuccessful, the current contract will expire on 31 December 2025, and no agreement will be in place from 1 January 2026.

Please note the following:

Reading access

  • A temporary grace period may allow continued access to newly published content. Thereafter, articles from 2026 onwards will only be accessible if published Open Access.
  • Access to previously subscribed content will remain available.
  • For help in locating non-accessible articles, see: “How to get the Article”.

Publishing

  • Publishing in hybrid journals will remain possible without charge, but articles will not be made Open Access; please do not select the Open Access option, and avoid paying APCs.
  • For Gold Open Access (fully OA) journals, neither the SNSF nor the University of Basel will cover APCs.
  • Please use Green Open Access (self-archiving) by depositing your accepted manuscript in UNIverse. The UB editorial team will confirm the embargo period before publication in edoc. This route complies with the University’s Open Access Policy and SNSF requirements.
  • An up-to-date list of publishers with agreements covering Open Access publishing costs is available here.

Recommendations from swissuniversitiesResearchers holding editorial roles with Springer Nature are asked to advocate for fairer publishing conditions. Review activities for Springer Nature should be critically assessed, and prioritization of such reviews is discouraged under the current conditions.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep the Uni Basel community informed of any developments. Further information and FAQs are available from the Consortium
