Web of Science is a Web portal by Clarivate Analytics which provides access to various databases licensed by the University Library. The databases can be searched individually or simultaneously.  All Databases searches over 150 million references from the Web of Science’s Core Collection, BIOSIS Previews, Data Citation Index, Derwent Innovations Index, INSPEC, MEDLINE and Zoological Records.

After an optional registration, the user can make use of personalised functions, for example individual home pages, email notification when new content is available for individual search profiles (Alert), or for new citations of articles (Citation Alert). This account is also valid for EndNote Online, Publons, ResearcherID, and InCites.

Content: WoS Core Collection (Citation Indexes)

  • Science Citation Index Expanded from 1900
  • Social Sciences Citation Index from 1900
  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index from 1975
  • Conference Proceedings Citation Index – Science, Social Sciences & Humanities from 1990
  • Book Citation Index – Science, Social Sciences & Humanities from 2005
  • Current Chemical Reactions, Index Chemicus from 1994

A total of over 50 million records of journal articles, conference reports and books in all subject areas.

What is special about Web of Science?

  • CITATIONS. In contrast to other databases, not only the bibliographic details and abstracts of journal articles can be found here, but also the cited article itself.
It can therefore be determined how often and by whom a particular article or author has been cited. All authors of the citation are recorded, and not only the first one.
The list of citations can also – in black text, i.e. without linking – contain references to articles that are not themselves included in Web of Science and therefore could be much older than those indicated above.
  • RELATED RECORDS. Starting from a displayed article, others with the greatest possible similarities in the citations (bibliography) can be determined.

Other special features:

  • Only journals that meet defined criteria are evaluated: clarivate.com/webofsciencegroup/solutions/editorial
  • For records before 2006, only the initials of first names are recorded: AUTHOR MOZART WA.
  • An Author Finder wizard is available for unambiguous name attribution.
  • The addresses of ALL authors of an article are listed.
  • Articles about a person or reviews can be found by means of a thematic search: TOPIC MOZART WA.
  • Only the English translation titles are recorded in the database.
  • Search results can be sorted according to various criteria (e.g. times cited) or analysed (e.g. a bar chart according to institution name).

Citation Report
With this function, the following details are identified for a maximum of 10 000 records (e.g. for a specific author):

  • Number of articles (incl. diagram)
  • Number of citations (with and excluding self-citations, incl. diagram)
  • Average number of citations per article and per year
  • h-index

Content: Statistical evaluation of journals

  • The Journal Impact Factor indicates how often articles published in years X-1 and X-2 of a specific journal have been cited on average in year X.
  • Citing Half-Life counts – from the survey year backwards – the publication years that contributed 50% to the citations.
  • Immediacy Index is the proportion of articles in a journal that were cited in the publication year.
  • With Journal Citation Reports only journals can be evaluated, as values for single articles are not collected.

Content: Statistical assessment of publication activity by country, institution, researcher and journals (ranking)

The 10 most recent years of around 9000 academic journals, divided into 22 subject areas*, are evaluated. This takes into account the fact that publication and citation habits differ greatly across the various research areas. An article in the field of molecular biology has been cited 23 times in the last 10 years, but only 2.3 times in mathematics. These values are called baselines. Comparisons across subject areas are therefore only acceptable, if at all, relative to these standardisation factors.
The system allows the display of lists that can be sorted according to researchers, institutions, countries and journals. Published articles and their citations are counted over the past 10 years. This provides the average number of citations per article. In addition, graphics showing chronological trends and links to the individual articles are available. However, only those scientists and institutions that are among the most cited in their subject area are included (1%).
It is obvious that the ESI values must be interpreted with great caution: the recording period of 10 years puts young researchers at a disadvantage; the shortening of first names to initials could result in the merging of authors with common names into one virtual person. In addition, the assignment of publications to one of the 22 subject areas or to an institution can be incorrect. For this reason, explanations (How to read this data) regarding the statistics are available in many places.
* Every journal is assigned to a single subject area. For interdisciplinary titles (e.g. Science, Nature, PNAS), the allocation takes place at article level.
