Training sessions
The University Library Basel offers a variety of training courses and guided tours. The spectrum ranges from a tour of the public areas without registration, through introductions to searching for information in the library catalogue, to introductions to subject-specific databases and courses in reference management. You are also welcome to let us know what your wishes are.
We regularly offer introductory events and present the university library and its services. At the beginning of each semester there are introductory sessions specifically for students.

For your academic research, the University Library Basel provides you with numerous catalogues, specialist databases and subject-specific portals. With targeted training courses we would like to support you with your individual needs for finding information and introduce you to the services offered by the University Library.
Would you like to manage your references more easily and efficiently? Each semester, several introductory courses are offered for the four reference management programs Citavi, EndNote, Zotero and Mendeley.
Citavi
The University of Basel has terminated the campus licence for Citavi for the end of February 2025. EndNote and Zotero are still available for reference management. The university now offers unlimited storage space in the Zotero cloud.
The university’s IT department cannot provide support for the switch from Citavi to Zotero or EndNote, but has compiled some helpful links:

Introduction to the library for school classes
The University Library Basel (UB) offers a wide range of guided tours for school classes. Our programmes offer access to the library at different levels – from becoming acquainted with the premises to conducting in-depth information searches. In addition to an introduction by our training team, there is also the opportunity to explore the reading rooms and openly-accessible areas of the University Main Library with the help of an app and to get to know the swisscoverylibrary catalogue by means of practice examples.
Offers for school classes
The guided tours are aimed at pupils in the middle/upper grades (10th to 13th school year), who need academic literature for their school-leaving or seminar paper.
- UB Light – Discover the library with an app
- UB Classic – Searching for information made easy
- UB Pro – Consolidation for advanced users
Please register as early as possible, but no later than 2 weeks before the desired date.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From 15 to 26 September 2025, i.e. during the first two weeks of the autumn semester 2025, we will unfortunately not be able to offer guided tours for pupils.
During this period, we will need all personnel resources for the daily introductory events for our first-semester students.

Further education opportunities for school librarians and middle school teachers
Once or twice per school year, the UB training team organises a low-threshold training course specifically for school librarians and middle school teachers. These events offer insights into current developments in information literacy and provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas with colleagues.
Invitation and registration
Invitations will be sent directly to school libraries. Registration is possible via the link provided in the invitation.
