Negotiations with Wiley for a agreement starting in 2025 began in spring 2024 but have now been terminated, leading to a no-deal situation
Negotiations between swissuniversities and Wiley regarding a new journal agreement on reading access and open-access publishing ended in March 2025. Swiss higher education institutions decided to withdraw as Wiley's latest offer was deemed unacceptable. The proposed offer would have reinforced the traditional subscription-based journal model, contradicting the goals of the national Open Access strategy, which aims to promote and sustainably secure open access to publicly funded research. Measures to mitigate the impact of the no-deal at the University of Basel
The University Library of Basel is preparing measures to mitigate the impact of a no-deal scenario on members of the University of Basel. Past experience indicate that thorough preparation and appropriate library services can minimize disruptions and additional workloads, thus ensuring minimal impact on research and teaching. The following will now be examined:
- Free article copy delivery service from Wiley journals if direct access is unavailable .
- Support for alternative open-access publishing routes through the repository of the University of Basel.
- Alternative open-access publication opportunities with other publishers.
