Introduction to searching for information

An introduction to searching for information for history students is offered as part of the introductory seminars for undergraduates every spring and autumn semester.

 

Subject areas:

  • Swiss history, history of Basel (including Regio Basiliensis)
  • Political history
  • Social history
  • History of mentality
  • Historical anthropology
  • Gender history
  • Jewish history
  • Historical auxiliary sciences: genealogy, numismatics, heraldry
  • Church, legal, medical and economic history, only marginally

Periods:

  • all eras
  • focus (in accordance with literature output) on the history of modern times, especially the 20th century

Regions:

  • all regions of the world
  • focus: Europe and the USA
  • other regions: particularly lexicons and general works
  • Switzerland: complete scientific literature where possible
  • Regio Basiliensis: where possible complete, including grey literature

Languages:

  • in particular literature in Western European languages
  • generally original editions, translations in exceptional cases

  • lexicons, encylopaedias, bibliographies
  • source editions
  • congress reports
  • exhibition catalogues
  • in the university’s network: e-journals, online databases and e-books
