The information, data and media literacy modules (IDM modules) are an alternative to the IDM semester courses. The modules can be put together in any combination. The content of the first two modules is generally already covered by existing offers provided by the subject librarians. With the help of the information specialists at the University Library of Basel, the IDM modules enable first-year students to receive additional targeted training in specific areas of information literacy.
Each of the modules described below will be tailored to the needs of the students in cooperation between the respective subject, the responsible UB department and other UB specialists. ideally, the modules should be embedded in already existing classes. In this basic module, students receive an introduction to the library, the use of Swisscovery and basic search strategies.
Learning objective: Students can orient themselves in the physical and virtual library and systematically find academic information; Duration: 30-60 minutes.

The focus of the basic module is particularly on specialist databases and portals, sources and repositories as well as other (subject) specific search locations.

In this module, students gain an insight into the use of reference management programs such as Zotero as tools for literature and knowledge management. It introduces citation systems and conventions and discusses the subject of academic integrity and plagiarism prevention.
Learning objective: Students are able to use programs to manage literature, insert it into texts and manage knowledge; Duration: 60-90 minutes.

This module introduces basic functions of common AI tools that can be used in higher education for writing or for conducting a literature search. One example for such a tool is Consensus.
Learning objective: Students learn to use AI tools in their studies in a reflective and critical manner and know how to use them for research; Duration: 90 minutes.

The module covers criteria that help students to assess information, as well as fact-checking, the verification of false information and risk-of-bias assessment.

This module provides an introduction to the digital academics. In particular, core topics of digital humanities are taught, including the compilation, reuse, analysis and visualization of data, a critical approach to questions and historical sources, or - in social science disciplines - the principles of data-supported research.

This module focuses on the organization of data in studies and academia and presents strategies for the secure storage, structured organization and efficient documentation of data.
Learning objective: Students know strategies for secure data storage and structured data organization and documentation and can apply these in practice in their own studies: Students will know the basics of research data management (RDM) relevant to their subject and qualification level; Duration: 90 minutes.

The module explores ways to identify open access content and conduct targeted searches for it, discusses forms of access and paywalls, and covers the fundamentals of open science and its importance in the early stages of a student’s academic career.
