Coffee Lecture, Forschung & Lehre

How do I evaluate scientific articles? Impact, risk of bias, and more

Part of the series "Coffee Lectures Health & Science"

This short lecture is a hybrid event: it takes place online as well as at Zentrum für Lehre und Forschung ZLF (Hebelstrasse 20, 4031 Basel), in room Möwe.

Overview
This 15-minute coffee lecture covers key strategies for critically assessing scientific articles. We’ll discuss impact (e.g., citations, journal quality, relevance) and risk of bias (RoB) using tools like RoB 2 (randomized trials), ROBINS-I (non-randomized studies), and QUADAS-2 (diagnostic accuracy studies). We’ll also clarify PRISMA (for systematic review transparency) and GRADE (for evaluating evidence certainty). Gain practical tips to quickly assess research reliability—ideal for improving literature reviews and informed decision-making in academia!

Lecturer
Dr. Robin Segerer, Information specialist psychology
